Johnny Grier, who turned the primary Black referee within the Nationwide Soccer League in 1988 and remained in that place, the highest one in an officiating crew, for 16 years, died on Tuesday in Pasadena, Md. He was 74.

He believed that he had a better job as a referee — which he referred to as babysitting the quarterback — than as a discipline choose.
