Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spills truth on controversial Randy Gregory split

The Dallas Cowboys let go of a handful of mainstays this offseason, including longtime defensive end Randy Gregory.

Randy Gregory signed a five-year, $70 million contract with the Denver Broncos at the onset of NFL free agency after being a member of the Cowboys organization since 2015. But reports initially indicated that Randy Gregory was set to stay onboard with the Dallas for virtually the same terms before it ultimately unraveled.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spilled the details on the specific moment wherein he decided that they were going to let go of Randy Gregory. Safe to say Jones reneged on pushing through with the deal in a very Jerry Jones manner.

Via Jori Epstein of USA Today:

“I was on the phone with Randy and his agent, and I said ‘El Paso,’ that little West Texas town. I said ‘El Paso – thank you, but no thank you,’” the Cowboys owner described his notification of “passing” on Gregory’s contract terms. “And he said, ‘Well I’ll go ahead and get on the plane.’ So we could have done something there, and they asked if we would do that, and I didn’t do it.”

“I (chose not to) do it of my own volition.”

Randy Gregory definitely didn’t take kindly to how things went down. The former Cowboys veteran claimed that Jerry Jones had “acted on bad faith” when it came to consummating the deal originally promised. But Jerry Jones remains grateful for the time Randy Gregory served with his franchise, offering up well-wishes for Gregory, except when it’s against the Cowboys.

“I wish Randy, as much as I’ve ever wished a player not playing for the Cowboys, the very best,” Jerry Jones told a handful of local reporters in his first public offseason comments. “He got the best I’m about and I think we got the best that he’s about. I’m proud of him.

“Sometimes your closest-in relationship becomes the most polarized quickly and lasts the longest. I don’t want that to be the case here. I want him to have a lot of success, except when he’s playing the Cowboys.”

Randy Gregory may not hold as warm of a place for Jerry Jones at this point, but it was clear he did want to return to the Cowboys had everything turned out according to plan.
